I wanted to change it to Neon preferably, but that ended up being harder than I expected, so I decided to settle for another color scheme instead. I use the ‘dark’ theme in the Postman settings, and I didn’t really like the ugly yellow color of the monokai syntax highlighting that came with it because it didn’t really coincide with how I was used to seeing HTML (I use the Neon color scheme on Sublime Text). Then I thought, well if I can do that, then changing the them of the syntax highlighting shouldn’t be too hard either. I sent a GET request and looked at the HTML response and to my surprise and satisfaction, it now displayed the HTML body in the ‘Pretty’ view with 2 spaces instead of 4!

I saved the file, then restarted Postman, having no idea whether I actually changed the right thing. I figured this would be what I needed to change, so I changed the line (line 84) this.step = ' ' to a string with 2 spaces instead of 4 (Medium won’t let me add more than one space between the quotes, so ignore the fact that it looks like it only has 1 space here). I searched for indent and spaces and found a function called vkbeautify with a helpful comment to the right that read // 4 spaces. From this, I decided to look for where this was located, and found it in resources/app/js/libs/vkbeautify.2.0.js, so I opened that up to look at. This led me to the term beautify, which seemed to be what controlled how the ‘Pretty’ view of HTML would appear. I started searching for indent, but didn’t have much luck, so then I searched for Pretty, since that’s what the type of view for displaying HTML in a more human-readable form is called in the Postman app (the other options are ‘Raw’ and ‘Preview’).

This file is over 300,000 lines of code long, so I decided to search for some keyterms to find what I was looking for. I noticed at the bottom of the file, there was a script element that referenced a JS script called requester.js located in the resources/app/js folder, so I opened that up next. I scanned through this file and saw that it didn’t contain too much code, so I then I realized that I would probably have to look elsewhere to find the place to change the indentation. I figured this would be a step in the right direction because the HTML display I wanted to change was shown in the body of the HTTP response received after sending a request, which I assumed should be related to requester.html. I started looking through all the folders, and found an HTML file called requester.html in the resources/app/html folder.

While I don’t know anything about JavaScript, I have a newly acquired basic knowledge of HTML/CSS, as well as some knowledge of Ruby, so I figured I could probably figure out how to change the indentation if I looked in the right place. I started looking around in the folders, and saw that Postman was built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I started by opening up the folder where I had installed Postman (on Ubuntu, this would be the folder where the tar.gz file was extracted to, or the folder where the Postman executable is located). I checked the options and searched on Google for a way to do this, but was unable to find anything, so I decided to try to figure it out on my own. So when I saw that the ‘Pretty’ view of HTML in Postman used 4 spaces for indentation, I wanted to change it to 2. I just got done with learning the basics of HTML, and I had gotten used to reading it with an indentation of 2 tabs instead of 4.

(I‘ve only tried this on Ubuntu, but I think it should probably work on Mac or Windows too.)

By native, I mean the stand-alone app that you can download that doesn’t run as a Google Chrome App. This post will explain how to change the number of spaces used for indentation and the syntax highlighting theme in the Postman native app. By default, Postman will display HTML with an indentation of 4 tabs instead of 2, and uses a syntax highlighting theme (color scheme) of monokai.
